Principal topics of interest in IAS events are applications of computer algebra and technical computing, Mathematica in particular, in mathematics, computer science, the physical and biological sciences, engineering, economics, the arts, and education. The seminar provides a forum for researchers, teachers, and even students, from diverse fields to present original work, and to learn about current developments and uses of advanced scientific computing. Besides keynote lectures and contributed papers, the seminar offers tutorials on Mathematica, discussion forums, poster presentations and software demonstrations. A central objective is to secure as many students as possible to participate in the seminar.
The
International Arctic Seminar, IAS 2005, followed the successful previous seminar in Murmansk (in May 2002), where a number of papers related to symbolic computation were presented by lecturers from Finland, Norway, and Russia for over 100 participants.
At IAS 2005, our emphasis was on applications of computer algebra technique in solving diverse engineering problems arising in the Offshore Oil & Gas Technology. However, many topics on symbolic computation, programming in Mathematica, and using Linux operating system were be presented and discussed.
The following topics were discussed in detail:
– boundary value problems and their solutions in Mathematica (e.g., applications for drill stems and risers, and for submarine pipelines)
– problems in applied mechanics, electronics, and mathematics (e.g., Lagrange's and Hamilton's formalisms in Mathematica, ultrasonic transducers, forest estimation and tree models, dynamical systems, chaos)
– symbolic computation (theory and applications)
– advanced methods in teaching by using Mathematica
– distributed computing in Linux
The seminar included tutorials on Mathematica technical computing environment and on Linux operating system, discussion panels, and software demonstrations.
All IAS 2005 events took place at the Continuum Mechanics and Offshore Exploration Department of the Murmansk State Technical University.

Aspects of Computation of Fractal Dimensions
Abstract: We consider computational methods to calculate the Hausdorff and Box dimension of Julia sets arising from complex dynamical systems generated by polynomials and rational complex functions and also some other fractal sets. Some of the existing algorithms are very easy to implement, but we have no control over the accuracy of the results. Other algorithms provides error estimates, but in many of these cases new numerical problems arise. We discuss some of these methods, and use both C programming and Mathematica programming to implement the algorithms, and compute a lot of examples. Some of the algorithms are well suited for parallel computations, in particular box counting methods with refinements.
